Seems like /moonspeak/ is what I need to get my question answered.Newfag here, I started to watch anime not so long ago (I've finished Rozen Maiden though) and I'm curious about one thing: what does mean "-chan" and "-san" added to names by japanese people (in this case - by anime characters)? And when you use "chan" and when "san"?Pic unrelated

you're welcome.
It's a matter of courtesy, basically. The Nipponese are obsessed with social hierarchies and status, which is reflected in their language. Off the top of my head, I could name you around a dozen Japanese words each for the concepts for which English only uses the words "you" and "I," and I'm not even that good at Japanese. Those words imply different things about the social relation between listener and speaker.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_honorificshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_pronouns
