Can you guys come desu on my server? It's a new freedom server for funposting with low moderation. Everyone has most permissions granted, you can define your own channel, manage messages, change peoples nicknames, use text-to-speech announcements, add or remove emojis, drag people between most voice chats, get your own personal vanity role and more.

[redacted]

(No. Bad. Do not advertise your discord server here.)

discord is always bad idea, in my opinion. first of all, it's a botnet platform that collects a huge amount of data. secondly (and more importantly) it divides the community. you probably didn't mean harm but it's still bad.

No thankyou, but you can always post some desu. That would be a blessing.

Nowhere is safe, except for my electromagnetic shielded basement, eh?

Also, what do you mean by saying "it divides the community"? I'm not sure if I follow you there.

Discord is NG. Please switch to IRC.

imo that's not an excuse for using a service that actively screws you over. You can (and you should) limit the data that's being collected on you. Why? Because any collected data or ""Telemetry"" won't gain you any benefits and, in fact, can be only harmful (used for selling more junku, for example).

>Also, what do you mean by saying "it divides the community"? I'm not sure if I follow you there.

Only a part of community uses discord (especially on imageboards). And that part might migrate to discord permanently (in other words, abandon the original community).

>>9838
this. IRC is the superior way of real time chatting. Also, there is no monopoly as you can choose which IRC client/network you want to use and botnet isn't built into its core.

Are you delusional? Just compare activity on any slow-paced imageboard and real-time chat associated with it (be it Discord server or IRC channel). There is always more activity on chats. Really, what kind of chat would it be doesn't matter one bit.
Did people migrate to IRC permanently? No, anons lurk here from time to time. And did people migrate to Discord permanently? No, we still are lurking the imageboard.

>any collected data or ""Telemetry"" won't gain you any benefits and, in fact, can be only harmful (used for selling more junku, for example).

That's another thing. But I'm afraid that's the cost of living in the modern world. It should be obvious to you that not only internet services do collect data on you, but also your mobile phone operator, your ISP, maybe even manufacturer of your smartphone or other electronical devices you own. Oposing it is noble, but futile. It's like you wanted to opose paying taxes.

>Are you delusional?

Delusional? How so? No, I don't feel delusional, I think. The way I see it, there is at least (in addition to the ones from my previous post) one big difference between Discords and IRC channels: Posting images (or other media) is very cumbersome on IRC but it's easy on Discord => now there is a large(-ish) overlap between Discords and imageboards. IRC doesn't have much overlap with the function of imageboards. Once the Discord starts to grow, it starts to directly compete with the original community (this also applies to Sub-Reddits). Also, most Anons who stumble upon another imageboards will likely either know how to post and behave on an imageboard or will (hopefully) lurk before posting so they learn the ways and the art of imageboardoring. However, when someone from a Sub-Reddit or a Discord finds an imageboard, either they don't have any interest in the imageboard at all or they ruin it (this happened with 4chan).

>Oposing it is noble, but futile. It's like you wanted to opose paying taxes.

In my opinion it's still worth limiting the amount of data that's being collected.

Just because you can post media directly instead of just links to images or music? I agree that's very nice functionality and certainly makes messaging on Discord more fun. But I don't agree that because of that it overlaps with imageboards. You see, as with any other chat, Discord makes it quite troublesome to read through older messages. It is possible, but very uncomfortable. For that purpose a static message board of a sort is way better - and thus imageboards still serve a purpose, even when people start using Discord for idle chat. So Discord does not rival imageboard, but rather complements it.

>In my opinion it's still worth limiting the amount of data that's being collected.

Certainly, but I guess it makes more sense not to create FB account (where you must supply your real name) instead of not using chat platform where you are virtually as anonymous as on any other message board (excluding imageboards, which are completely anonymous, but that makes them special).

discords killing boards is not an invalid concern. I saw MANY discord servers kill many boards during 8ch's growth. The community would migrate, private dm's and private chat groups would split the community into subsections, drama would spill out, infighting would begin. Ive not seen this in any rm groups, but many others, so those who caution this aren't exactly in the wrong. Discord has its uses, despite its lacking safety and privacy, but caution is very valid.

>> No.9893   [Delete]   [Edit]

While I don't believe that allowing Discord shilling would make this place any more dead than it already is, Discord servers even if not tied to the corresponding board directly still have a tendency to start cancerous drama that affects the board in some way too.
