Does anyone want to embark on a painfully long journey so that we can better the internet?

I've found an evangelion dating sim released by gainax.
Its only in moonspeak.
Id like to work with someone and make a subbed version of the game.

This will take a lot of work.
If i can get the help, ill redo the game.
From audio to visuals, i suppose bringing it up to par from its original release in 2005.

Hey /moonspeak/, I've got a problem.

I'm attempting a translation of a Japanese doujin game, and am running across weird behavior. Some words seem to act as escape characters, and cut off the dialog mid word. Example:

Original Japanese:

  • -aaaa--!?ee
  • -aaaa--ここはどこだろう…ee

fnaaaa--何をしていたのか 思い出せない…ee

Initial test translation attempt:

  • -aaaa--!?ee
  • -aaaa--I wonder where this is…ee

General...As long as I do what you, say, I will get my debut right?
「ああ。働き次第では出撃(デビュー)だけではなく第一艦隊(レギュラー)入りも考えよう(ゲス顔」
Yes. I will even think about adding you on as a regular as well as debuting you depending on how good a job you do (wicked smile).
「・・・わかりました・・・那珂ちゃん!がんばります!」
...Got it...I'll do my best!

Hey, I just riddle about this Kanji compound.
大和: Yamato
Why is it spelled like this?!
Neither of these Kanjis has a spelling of "yama" or "to" if written standalone.
Only in this compound these are spelled "yamato".
Thank you in advance :)

>Why is it spelled like this?!

Probably just because it's more GRORIOUS than 倭.

>Only in this compound these are spelled "yamato"

Well, yeah. This is a good example of the Japanese taking a word and assigning it characters that relate to it semantically but have nothing to do with its pronunciation.
For more info, check out http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/熟字訓

They also do the reverse, giving words characters that are commonly pronounced as the word in question, but have nothing to do with it semantically. Like 亜米利加, 露西亜 or 炉利紺 for example. See http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/当て字

OK, so e.g. "薔薇乙女" and "薔薇少女" are basically the same but written with different Kanji with the same meaning {bara[rose] otome[maiden]}.
Is there a way how to determine how to do that in real life? I mean in Windows the IME gives you a lot of suggestions, but that's not really helpful for learning (IMHO).
>>947
Those links were quite helpful. Is there a dictionary out which covers the topic of "Ateji" and "Jukujikun"?
As far as I understand "Ateji" are Kanjis put together which compose a meaning of the to be expressed word. Like the wiki example "tobacco" which has the Kanjis for "smoke" and "grass".
Jukujikun is, as you said, to express the words in Kanji by semantics?
So "大和" semantically is composed of "dai{big} wa{peace, harmony, sum}", so Japan is resembled by one of these: "big harmony", "big peace" or "a whole".
Have I understood that correctly?

>> No.949   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>948

>Japan is resembled by one of these: "big harmony", "big peace" or "a whole".

Sort of. The thing is, 和 often means something like "Japanese-style", in contrast to 洋 (western-style) or 漢 (Chinese-style). For example, 和製ホラー are Japanese horror movies/stories, 和服 is traditional Japanese clothing, and so on.

>As far as I understand "Ateji" are Kanjis put together which compose a meaning of the to be expressed word. Like the wiki example "tobacco" which has the Kanjis for "smoke" and "grass".

Tee hee, I think you were confusing which article you were reading half-way through. 煙草 is a 熟字訓.
当て字 are 漢字 chosen based on their 読み方 without regard to their meaning. Take the word 炉利紺(ロ・リ・コン) for example. That word's meaning has nothing at all to do with Fireplaces, Profit or the color Dark Blue, but the 漢字, when they appear in other compounds, are commonly read this way.
One cool thing about this is that they often take one of those characters which then serves as an abbreviation for the rest of the word. For example, you might see something like 米軍, meaning US Army, even though 米 originally only meant "rice." This comes from the fact that 米 is one of America's 当て字 in 亜米利加 (アメリカ).

>> No.1597   [Delete]   [Edit]

This is known as jukujikun - When the kanji have a relation to the meaning of the word, but the reading is different.

It happens pretty often for words ordinarily written in katakana, too. Here are some more examples:
火傷 = やけど (burn)
煙草 = タバコ (tobacco)
麦酒 = ビール (beer)

These are more often written in kana, however

Nice to see that this place is so dead. Heres something that you guys, who are obviously still here, can read. Its some drivel that I hastily rewrote at 3 in the morning since I lost it.Then you can horribly critique my grammar (Maybe someone within the next, oh, 6 months will come along)! Good stuff. Suppose the third paragraph is a bit hyppocritical at this point, but sometimes you just need to be told, you know?

I love how I can look back at every month, say about the past month, "OH, I FUCKING SUCKED! I'm so glad I'm awesome this month."繰り返してて

Here's this month's "improvement"
