so, Desuchan... Let's talk about zombies.
As i may have mentioned on the IRC, i am writing a zombie survival story... Thing.
Since i'm deciding stuff as i go, i have a lot of room for suggestions.
So, if you have a cool idea and want to suggest it, like a zombie class or something, do tell.

Or we can just have a generic zombie talk thread. It's still cool.

if you want me to, i actually have a pre-storyline concept that explains the "how the fuck did i land in a town full of fucking zombies?"... AND IT ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE! sort of...
so... you can have it :V

sounds awesome! I'm interested :D
it's so difficult to find an explaination for zombie stories that makes some sense. Usually it's just a bunch of stupid theories or clichè (like the only thing i managed to come up with)

from the depths of my log folder, cropped down to it's very basics. it was from a "Resident Evil MMORPG" concept, but i know your infinite /lit/-magic will make some great fic of it :V

Speaking of zombies, did you know that Red Dead Redemption is going to have a zombie campaign Add-On? Yeah.

Zombies in the the early 20th century American west, let that sink in for a bit.

>> No.13112   [Delete]   [Edit]

someone was designing self replicating nano mashenes to repair/replace braincells in the elderly that suffer from Alzheimer. these mashenes are designed so that they can only replicate in the presents of nerve cells. When a nerve cell dies one of these nanites take its place. these machines alone are designed to relay and boost electrical impulses to the extremities and when in large masses. Form a network with the sole purpose of providing the elderly with their basic necessities. help moving around, getting food, eating, and regulating sleep patterns for when the brain is tired.
Problem. they underestimated the speed at witch they would replicate as well as how they would function if all the original braincells were dead leaving the person without rational thought. The over abundance of them quickly crowd out the healthy nerve cells and replace the entire nervous system. with all the brain dead they would be controlled solely by the network of machines that are programmed to only recognize whats edible as well as how to get it and eat it. When they try to eat someone else the Nanomachines spread to their nervous system as well.

sry for all the bad grimmer

That would mean prior to the zombie apocalypse there would be hordes of geriatrics bum rushing super markets and farms, going after the easier meal. Also before going after people they'd be going after pets and other animals.

Cannibalism isn't really a natural response in humans. If what's driving them is simply a need to feed on anything, they'd bypass humans for other easier and more healthier meals.
With you model for a zombie apocalypse the only time the zombies would resort to eating other humans is when the rest of world has also resorted to that.

Just saying.

>> No.13116   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>13115
I.. hmmm.. well how about the food they target is based on the nanites own monitoring of the body's functions. and since they have destroyed the nervous system they seek the closest and richest available sources of the key nutrients to rebuild them i.e. brains XD

I watching the Discovery Channel one day, and I saw this disease that infects birds by first infecting snails, causing them to grow a bright red pustule which lead the snail out in the open. The bird eats the snail for it is an easy target. How does the disease get into the snails? Bird poop.
A disease that manipulates the actions of its host to help propagate itself actually does exist...

Let that sink in for a bit.

i heard of something like this too, it worked more or less the same way, with the only difference that it was something like a bacteria or an extremely small creature that infected ants and "remote controlled" them into climbing on grass and staying there, until a sheep would eat them together with the grass. The ant would get into the sheep's stomach and the bacteria thing would finish its reproductive cycle and start over again once expelled.

Apart from all this, in my story the infection spreads because of an accident involving a scientifical project (hence the title of the story, "the Ellipsis accident"... Ellipsis was obviously the name of said project.)
the experiment's laboratory explodes during a storm causing an otbreak of infective gas.
This is where i get struck. I still have no idea what the gas contained, and still haven't decided on the zombies' behaviour and look. I was thinking of going something like my latest post in /o/ (tumor-like mutations on face and body) but i realize how it would remind too closely of Left4Dead. Same goes for eventual ideas like "evolving" or different zombie classes.
I still don't have to explain this stuff, but i'm struck D: any ideas?

pic related, if you can understeand wtf is goin on.

>> No.13129   [Delete]   [Edit]

That's the cordyceps unilateralis fungus.
Nature is creepy.

My suggestion is some kind of parasite, perhaps a fungus or flatworm. Fungi could easily cause "mutations" - eg, the reproductive parts of the fungus - but then you'd be looking at a probably airborne plague rather than spread by bite.

>> No.13131   [Delete]   [Edit]

I think some has to answer question the of "how do zombies tell the difference between infected and non infected?"

I figure the best way would be through pheromones. I don't think it would be quite a stretch to say that a disease would be able to alter the body's sweat glands to release a pheromone that the zombies identify each other with. Colonies of ants use a similar method to communicate with each other.

The smell wouldn't have to be easily identifiable to survivors, but if it was it could serve as a omen of impending doom to the survivors. I'm sure a large group of berserk infected would have distinctive smell.

>I think some has to answer question the of "how do zombies tell the difference between infected and non infected?"

What if there's someone controlling them?
For that matter, the "outbreak" might be nothing of the sort - perhaps it's intentional.
This works better with the black-magic variety of zombie than the plague-zombie, though.

>> No.13134   [Delete]   [Edit]

actually the fungus-variant would work. as it´s a semi-living thing combined with the host. also mushrooms mostly have a smell too, so an option for "no friendly fire" is given. airborne zombie infection would work, as the "survivors" can be immune to it for some reason. (maybe some sort of citrus acid is kinda like vaccine to the spores if dosed high enough, natural enemies are always cool ;D)

i like this idea. I was actually thinking of some sort of airborne infection. This was my idea more or less... Whatever is causing the infection (some kind of mutated fungus sounds just great to me) is in the air, but only a relatively small portion of the population gets infected by breathing it. The people who are immune to the "air" contact can still get infected by bite or other means.
It could work since it was created in a laboratory.
>>13132
i like the idea of it being intentional. Like a large-scale experiment that goes horribly bad.
>>13134
that's more or less what i was thinking :D (sorry, didn't read the message before writing what i said above)

oh, and i found a way so that there are no child infecteds (baby zombies are like the most annoying thing ever)
basically, when a child gets infected, the body, not being fully devloped yet, can't bear the infection and dies. Having a weaker immune system (like old people) children can also get infected more easily, wich solves the problem of having brats in the story :D

Hey, remember the April Fool's joke in 2005 where "BBC" reported about the zombie outbreak in Quan'sul? I'm currently conceptualising a story based on it (I have typed out an introductory draft before, but hard drive crash on my old laptop forced me back to square one).

Also, help me with this dilemma: how do you go through a zombie outbreak without usage of guns?

there is plenty of way to beat zombies without gun, in fact in a zombie apoc everyone will run out of ammo soon enought without the knowledge and the tools for making ammo/repair guns.

you can still use lotta melee from gardens tools to hand made explosive passing by bows etc...

but i think being smart is the best weapon against them, use your brain before they eat it !

sounds like a cool story idea!
Also, >>13164 there, perfect answer. You just go for melee weapons and aim for the head. Just as long as it isn't shovels. Of all the gardening tools, this is the worst for zombie hunting. Ironically, it is also seems to be everyone's weapon of choice...

>> No.13212   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>13190
swords are heavy and bows require a lot of strenght in the arms and training. When you think about it, there are really few weapons one could use correctly without being trained D:

by the way, i have reached the point in the story where i have to describe the zombies and i still haven't decided if i want them to be "fast zombies" (like L4D) or regular slow ones... Also i don't know how they may look like D: arghh

>> No.13213   [Delete]   [Edit]

medium fast ones. i like them when they try to run at you as soon as they notice you, just to trip a few meters later :D

also for such an "infection", best would be if they look pale, like if they're sick. with open wounds which are inflamed because they're all dirty, broken extremities now and then. ripped off flesh if you want them to be aggressive.

>> No.13214   [Delete]   [Edit]

While you were on the topic of spores and whatnot causing the infection, why not make it so that the spore(if thats what you decided on) after causing its host to die, it makes them sprout some sort of extra "extremity" like the cordyceps unilateralis does with the ants. It would probably make them more identifiable to the survivors if anything else.

yeah, i'll probably do something like this :D yay for the fungus theory.
As for the speed, i'll probably settle on fast zombies, with only a few that are very slow. This will also make the story more interesting, since the protagonist sprained her ankle after meeting her first infected. What a pussy...
