Can /tech/ suggest a decent mic?
I just got VoIP and Skype connected to a makeshift voice changer, but my laptop mic blows and so have the ones I've bought. I need a desktop mic with some range so that I don't need the thing shoved down my throat to pick up sound. I already have headphones coming out of my ass so I'm avoiding headsets, and 3.5mm jack would be best since it's a laptop and has limited USB ports.

I seem to pick up a lot of noise with analog microphones. Could just be my pc. I wouldn't suggest logitec though.

I would like to know what Desuchan uses for security on their computers. This includes anything you use from antivirus and web browser safety to hardware firewalls. I ask because I swear every time I blink, there is something out there that I should be using, but I'm not. And since I work on the sides cleaning up other people's computers, I'd like to know whats better than what I'm using. Also, a lot of fake antivirus/anti-spyware stuff out there now. What have you seen that looked real, but ended up being bullshit?

Avira anti-virus, ZoneAlarm firewall, and a shitton of >>1760 I had a reg-blocker but it used too much power.
All new programs get tested in a sandbox, or on a separate test-computer when available.
Security for Firefox is AdBlock, NoScript, BetterPrivacy, CipherFox, and OptimizeGoogle.

I have more tools but they're independent and not really used in normal protections. Stuff like registry watchers, FileMon, TCPView, unpackers, FileAlyzer, etc

>>1766
Glary has file recovery. Recuva (by Piriform, ppl who made CCleaner) is good too.

>>1912
no problem, just use Truecrypt.

P.S.- AVG sucks balls. I've done a bit a work in AV detection and bypassing and AVG is one of the crappiest. They don't have very good signatures, there are tons of false-positives, and their heuristics are next to nothing.

related to the image...
i was working at tech support, checking quality, and some old woman complained that her computer was dirty.
So someone suggested as a joke that she should clean it with alcohol, and she promptly thanked us and hung up.
This was tech support for a company, and she was probably worried about cost or something.
Anyways, her boss called our boss the next day telling us not to give such advice, even as a joke, because she went out and bought a bottle of vodka and washed the pc with it.
The computer worked, but the whole office smelt like vodka, so they had to dump the machine.

I hope /tech/ doesn't mind Notebooks

Dell Studio 1558
Intel Core i5-520M 2.4Ghz-2.93Ghz (Turbo Boost)
4 GB DDR3 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 512 MB GDDR3
500 GB 7200 RPM HDD
Broadcom 802.11n Network Card
1920x1080 15.6" screen <3

And 1 Month Later Dell decides to give the option of a 1 GB Mobility Radeon HD 5470 :/

Also, even though it's 1920x1080 on a 15.6" screen, it's really not that bad. Everything is still reasonably large and the color accuracy is really great.

This is some of the things I do and use to make Firefox more usable, faster, and possibly safer. If anyone has other suggestions let me know.

In about:config
------------------------TABS----------------------------
browser.tabs.closeButtons; 2
(Removes X in tabs. Use center mouse button or two fingers on touch pad instead.)

browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent; FALSE
(All new tabs open on the far right as previous versions.)

browser.tabs.maxOpenBeforeWarn; 3
(Prevent folders full of Bookmarks from flooding the tabbar by accident.)

yes yes yesss! One step closer! I saw Samsung's transparent laptop monitor but I didn't think that TOLEDs could get work in that small of a space just yet. I bet it would be more transparent without the touch screen too.

Car companies got to rip you off somehow. Got to pay out the ass to update those maps in that increasingly obsolescent, but expensive to replace, computer system and spend 3-5 times the amount replacing your cracked windshield.

Or they could just make space on the dash to strap down a small laptop which can be moved from car to car and carried into the house to, I don't know, USE.
