Currently this is my battlestation.

  1. A desktop that is a real desktop, not one of those limited gimped mini desktop.
  2. A three-year old laptop that is currently unused for now but I want to use it for secondary purposes and stuff like for DVD viewing and shit.
  3. A 2.1. sound system
  4. A simple headphone with mic.

But I want to add the following for my perfect battlestation:

  1. Two other monitors. I have one other monitor, which is a 720p 16:10 HDTV/DVD player combo in storage and want to buy another 16:9 monitor as well. Also I want to add two vertical monitors for texts such as magazines and digital books and irc conversations/windows.
  2. Hook up my modern video game consoles (PS2, Xbox 360) to my battlestation
  3. Possibly another external hard drive for all my stored anime, music, and recorded TV shows, and have my current hard drive I have to be used as a static archive/recovery hard drive, and get a new external hard drive for my current content.

I've been waiting to do this since early 2010, and this is my chance. Any other suggestions in how this can be done, feel free to reply.

My way of protesting Microsoft for removing the traditional Startmenu from Windows 8

But eh, it's not worth raging about. I mean XP was around a long time before Vista was released. Unlike Vista, Win7 was another solid success, so as OP suggested, we can safely pretend Win8 doesn't exist so that MS doesn't ever do this again and releases another "solid" OS. (Starting with THE ABOMINATION also known as Millenium, the sequence Windows releases are kinda like Star Trek films at this point.)

(And yes I know about Win+M, the classic "Show Desktop" shortcut since 95 that I've read takes you back to a more normal view and efficient third-part app launchers. This is still a nuisance I should not have to skip, and it effectively wastes development resources.)

So, I've finally dug out my PS2 from the various boxes it's been sat in for the past couple of years. I'm hoping that some of the more adventurous/nefarious among us could point me in the right direction here. Basically I'm just looking to play a couple of downloaded ROMs on it - ideally from an image on a usb drive rather than burnt, but that's entirely flexible. I gather that it's also possible to use it as a media centre of sorts, playing music & xvids, which'd probably feature into my plans at some point.

I've done a few hours of googling, and it seems the McBoot option is the best way forwards; however everything I can find about it suggests I already need access to a modded console to install it onto the card, which I don't (and nor does anyone I know). Is that actually the case, or is there a way around it? If not, what'd be the next best port of call?

Sorry if this sounds a bit garbled, very tired at the moment. -_- thanks in advance!

Are you sure? Donkey Kong Country kicks serious ass with the PS2 controller.

>> No.1491   [Delete]   [Edit]

you don't need a modded ps2 to use mcboot. there are memory cards out there you can buy that you can hook up to your pc and then install mcboot and ESR on them. this is what I did anyway. it works great. only thing is, when you torrent roms you need to apply a small patch to every single rom before you burn them, but with a small app this is very easy.
if you take care to use high quality discs and slow burning speeds it'll be ok. (laser in ps2 isn't that good most of the time)

I used this card http://www.memor32.com/ and the place I bought it from had mcboot/ESR and stuff preinstalled but you can download it yourself as well. there is plenty of info about this on the net, but you do have to do some research.

>> No.1492   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>1490

I may later look into it, the good thing about McBoot is it's completely modular. :) I'm also getting an XBOX from a friend for XBMC, although may end up using it as an XBOX and just having XMBC on my old craptop running headless. there's a lot to be said for a silent wireless media PC.

>>1491

It doesn't need to be modded to use McBoot no, but to make a McBoot card you need a non-vanilla setup somehow. Catch 22. Memor32 is a viable install method but isn't in the 'normal' loadout, and looks to cost more than swapmagic. I found someone in my LUG with HDLoader, he's playing around at the moment installing it - not out of the woods yet as it's not plain sailing apparently, but looking very good. :D

>> No.1512   [Delete]   [Edit]

The way I set up my mcboot system was to make use of a sharkport/xport to transfer the files to my memory card. I first had to do the independence exploit to cause my ps2 to launch ulaunchelf whenever I would insert Chrono Cross. Then, I executed the mcboot installer to convert the card. The process is a bit of a pain and sharkports are not cheap these days so just buying the memor32 card is probably the best option.

It's kinda interesting how all that stuff works. They managed to hack the memory card used to update the ps2 DVD playback that was included with the DVD remote accessory and change it into a stub loader leading to the memento firmware used with memor32 which was itself reverse engineered to lead to mcboot.

ESR essentially tricks the ps2 into thinking that the burned game is a video dvd by having a video dvd filesystem alongside the game filesystem. The ps2 only sees the video dvd part and allows it to play since burned video dvds are allowed. When the disk is chosen to be played, ESR tells the ps2 to execute the data on the other filesystem instead.

>> No.1516   [Delete]   [Edit]

It's all sorted now, said friend managed to get it going with HDloader. Now just waiting for a network adaptor from ebay, and I'm all set... until the Xbox/XBMC arrives anyway.

>>1512

Indeed, it's amazing that people can actually work all that out given just the hardware... does make one wonder whether PS2 devs helped the homebrew lads out along the way.
