Here is something I have never need to do until reciently: remotely connect to my home desktop from my laptop from a long distance. All I really want to do is access music and anime to play while I'm waiting around. I was wondering if anyone had any pretty cool solutions for this.

I don't know about WinAMP (I guess it might work), I don't know too much about how to use it, I use VLC. You could forward the ports required, and set up VLC to stream what you want. Or you could set up a web server on your computer and download them over HTTP. The latter would be a better idea, it won't be choppy, you'll have the whole file.

>> No.1838   [Delete]   [Edit]

VLC could work, if I could figure out how to foward the ports I guess, but that doesn't solve the music problem. As far as setting up the web server, that sort of defeats the purpose.

i use
http://ampache.org/ and http://openvpn.net/

which distro are you running OP it is really easy in Ubuntu?

>> No.1844   [Delete]   [Edit]

LogMeIn is a pretty simple solution, though I'm not sure if the performance will be suitable for viewing the anime on the computer (mostly due to the upload speed). You can do pretty much anything with the free version.

>> No.1845   [Delete]   [Edit]

Read up on Winamp Remote, that might be useful to you.

I just bought http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=49495&vpn=ST50F-ES&manufacture=Silverstone%20Technology for $56. The new sale is http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=30037&vpn=EA650&manufacture=Antec&promoid=1019 for $66.

I know the extra 150W is worth the $10 but i'm looking at probably $15 or more in postage to send the Silverstone back.

Silverstone vs. Antec, should I bother exchanging it?

Sorry i have no experience with those brands so i don't know about their quality or warranties but, have you ever used a page like this one http://www.journeysystems.com/?power_calculator to figure out how much power you really need? i was really surprised about my own power needs after i entered in my system.

Also I figure the further your average usage is from its peak power output over the years the longer it should last assuming nun of the fans burn out.

i bought one of these. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276567&Sku=ULT-LSP750
it feels really well built and has a life time warranty.

>> No.1814   [Delete]   [Edit]

I tried a couple calculators, the average was about 450W (lolraid6). So that's the other reason I'm thinking of "upgrading", the 650 would give me a nice buffer.

>> No.1818   [Delete]   [Edit]

At such a cheep price i would just keep it and run it till it dies (and that may be several years from now). but if you're planning on upgrading soon I'd trade it in.

/tech/ I need help huntan for tablets on a budget. 420 wasn't very helpful. I was thinking of either the Genius i608 or the Wacom Bamboo Pen. The Wacom is more expensive and more known but the i608 seems to have better specs and a lower price. Or are both of them horrible? need halp.

btw I think thats a lot of money for a notebook with mediocre graphics card. Mobility Radeon HD 3200 if I'm not mistaken. It barely scores better than Intels 4500's which are common as dirt and are as low as 400 dollars.
(not bashing you, just want to inform others)

>> No.1788   [Delete]   [Edit]

I use it to draw on CS2 all the time (its also touchscreen). And yeah, I thought the graphics would be trash as well. But I was pulling 60+ FPS on Rappelz which shocked the hell out of me. It gets a bit hot though =(

>> No.1789   [Delete]   [Edit]
>>(its also touchscreen)

That would explain the additional cost. Dont think touch screens are as accurate as tablets though.

IIRC I have a Wacom Graphire 2. I seldom use it anymore. I say look at reviews on newegg if they're on there.

It's pretty suprising how accurate it is. You can switch between touch to stylus instantly with pinpoint accuracy (wich stylus). There is also a button in the corner that will switch the view 90º per press, which is great for presentations, since the screen falls flat on the keyboard and -can- come with a nice view-holder. Image related.

It is a bit expensive, but it's most definitely not just for its tablet implimentations. I simply just wanted to throw my 2¢ in since I experienced the use of a higher end option. And on that note, I believe there is a TX2700 option out that runs better specs.

>> No.1793   [Delete]   [Edit]

Ehh, yeah, meant drawing tablet, sorry brahs. Anyway yeah it's a bit strange, the i608 looks nicer but there's almost literally no feedback for it so I just went for the Bamboo Pen. Poor genius. Oh well, drawfaggin ahoy.

Question for /tech/

How would you set up this network?

The I need the 'Router' for the phone. The 'Wireless Router' doesn't have a phone jack.

Keeping the LAN to the laptop is optional.

Sorry, I have no idea why you're using a phone that plugs into your router if it's not provided by phone/cable companies. The ones around here give us modems the phone can plug into and then the router works just as it normally would.

>> No.1743   [Delete]   [Edit]

I actually have this same set-up. At the first (non-wireless) router, change the firewall settings to allow all traffic to enter the second router's IP address. Then, at the second router, change the DHCP settings so that both routers operate on different subnets (So, if the first router's address is, it's on the subnet; change the second router to the subnet).

If you can post the make/model of both routers, I can give better instructions.

the drops in rates might be problems with the card inside the desktop... for example a Wireless N station can drop down to b/g Modulation/Multiplexing for compatibility, but sacrificing the rate. Also, look at the access points in your area and see what channel has least traffic on it.

Lastly, why have you got wireless on a desktop?

>> No.1782   [Delete]   [Edit]

last question; to be rid of the wires from one room to the other. Ultimately I need to get my ISP to get their lazy asses over here and rewire everything to the new office.

That actually is probably the best coarse of action. I've done everything else imaginable and still my rates are completely random.

All for the better though. It's time for a modem upgrade anyway.

>> No.1790   [Delete]   [Edit]
>My connection to my desktop is sporadic. ranging anywhere from 18Mpbs to 54Mpbs.

you don't happen to use an USB WLAN stick?

also you might want to check if getting a "repeater" is an option for that. it basically is a WLAN router that connects to another one and pushes the signals, increasing the range.

one last advice: the more routers you use, the more the transfer rate drops. especially with old ahrdware

The iPhone isn't really as bad as people say, granted, it's not for people who know what the fuck their doing, but the grand majority (the people Apple is marketing to) is pretty damned stupid in this respect. Apple is making shitloads of money off of the Apps and the phones. Obviously, they're not as bad as many people think, or Apple's managed to brainwash half of cell phone users. Either those two, or the people who use them don't know better.

I use an Android myself, actually. I have been quite happy with my G1, thank you very much. Quite frankly, I would love to see the smoothness of the iPhone in the Android, it's not as smooth around the edges and feels a little "stiffer" than the iPhone.

All in all, they're both fine devices, worth the price you pay, with that being said, an iPhone may not be for you, but it doesn't mean the device is terrible, conversely, just because you don't like the Android doesn't make it a piece of shit. Arguing over this topic is basically the same as the Mac vs PC thing (I lean towards OS X, but it doesn't mean I can't make an objective debate), it's stupid. One is not inherently better than another, they're all good in their own regards.

Blackberry? What.

Which is why i was hoping for half intelligent people to provide some insight to either side.

(soooooooo don't want this to turn in a fanboy rage fest. :/ )

I have a 2G iPhone now, but am wondering if i should stick with the iPohne line, and go to a 3GS/4G(if i can afford it). Or go for one fo the smartphones.

>> No.1755   [Delete]   [Edit]

Do what you want, the iPhone is nice, and so is the Android. Go to you local AT&T store and play with the phones a bit, see what you like.

Alright, i'm probably the only one who regularly looks at the NASA's Solar Weather Mission (SOHO) to get an idea of sun weather..

If a Solar Flare was going to it Earth and cause MAJOR damage to electrical equipment, i'd disconnect everything from power, cover all electronics in aluminium foil (shitloads of it) and cover windows and ceilings with foil..

what would you guys do?

the faraday cage sounds like the best idea - trouble is, copper mesh is not cheap.

Sup, /tech/. I need some help regarding downgrading my iPod Touch 3rd Gen 3.1.3 to 3.1.2.
I've tried all the instructional videos and guides, with no luck. I did the "hosts" change and entered DFU mode, etc. But each time I try to restore the Touch, I always get a message saying the firmware file is incompatible.
The only one that works is "iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore", but when it's nearly finished restoring I get another error.
Any help you could give me would be highly appreciated! Need any more info, just tell me and I'll get it.

>> No.1722   [Delete]   [Edit]

While i've never done a downgrade for my iPhone. I would assume it would be the same way you would upgrade it. Just back it up, and restore it by shift+right click(or mby left, forgot) on the restore button on itunes, then select the firmware you want to put on it. Then re-jailbrake and sync.

Am also assuming its the same when upgrading jailbroken iTouches. But i could be wrong. meh.
