The battle was pretty tough for both sides. I lost the right side group of buggies at the start, constantly failed to take out the right side battery with combined Rokkits and Kannon fire until the end, and thus had my center line pounded with of Artillery fire.

My Flash Gitz were tough as nails and held the flanks nicely, killing off Heavy Weapons Teams left and right, and the center line's Big Shootas actually penetrated some of the Chimera's paper armor.

The Warboss and his boyz met a nasty end after numerous artillery barrages and a charge from some Ogryns and the Big Mek's Shokk Attack Gun didn't do as much damage as I thought it would. He only took out a Chimera and some random Guardsmen.

On turn 3 or 4 all of the reinforcements arrive on both sides of the field. He placed his forces on his main line like a true guardsmen when I placed one in the center to replace the now dead Warbosses force and another on the right to distract his right side Ordnance Battery. This tactic payed off pretty well I'd say.

We both had a case of Bad Rolling Syndrome. My opponent kept missing with his Chimera shots and had some terrible scatters rather frequently, meanwhile I had moments were I'd rolled 1/1/1 and 1/1/1 again on my TL Rokkit Launchers and other shenanigans.

Eventually the Guard player conceded the game and victory went to the Waaahg. Picture related, it's the end game board. I felt he could have made a comeback if his dice weren't being shit.

As you can see, I eventually disabled the left side battery and the Flash Gitz liked making their morale checks.

I won 5 to 4. I lost the Kannons, a group of Boyz, the Warboss, and a Buggie formation. He lost a number of Heavy Weapons Teams and a Platoon Command Squad.

It was my first time playing Orks and I liked 'em a lot, though I still prefer playing Dark Eldar.

I plan on doing more games with Joey and will occasionally post more battle reports.

We have #desugames for a reason, guys. I suggest a D&D game on some weekday evening.

Basic rules:
http://www.d20srd.org/

We'll use generic classes, since they're flexible (and probably easier for new players):
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/genericClasses.htm

Player races... forthcoming. We can use some different ones - might as well keep elves and humans, but I wanna throw in fairies and two reptilian races and maybe something else too.

One thing I'd like to put forward is that we switch GMs after each adventure arc round-robin style - that way everyone gets to play a character and everyone gets to GM. I think this would be not only fun and keep a good variety going, but help to give people some experience leading a game once they're used to playing.

When you're GM, your character would be considered to be at home, working a day job - so when switching roles your inactive character could still roll to have made money at a profession, crafted something, gone shopping for goodies, etc.

Couple other rules that I'll toss out there:
If you start trained in the Handle Animals skill, you can start with your horse trained for combat riding or anything else you want to train it for, as per the skill. I wanted to start you off with rides so you don't have to walk everywhere like chumps and can get to places in a reasonable amount of time.
Secondly, if you're proficient with martial weapons you can use the standard spear in one hand. Probably won't need this rule but there it is.

Oh, /tg/ is the new sandbox eh?

I've just been seeing the top thread and assuming it was still /c/... =3

So, uh, should we get to the part where we bitch about D&D's newer editions?

I've enjoyed 4e thus far, but the pace the books are being released at gives me an ominous feeling...

I don't want to res a dead topic, but i just wanted to say that my party switched to Pathfinder. 4e gave up ALL it's supplements, meaning that all classes and feats that my party use (cause the base ones amount to crap after a bit) are now invalid.

Pathfinder is 3.5e reworked and they adjusted a few small things. You get better faster and the "beastiary" is filled with tons of nightmarish remakes to compensate. and it's perfectly compatible with EVERY book before 4e. We've also played Burning wheel, Dark Heresy, world of darkness, DnD, Starwars, and soon Anima and Firefly; and my entire party unanimously agrees that 4e is a piss shitting way to update a 20+ year old system.

>> No.119   [Delete]   [Edit]

I started D&D with 4e (I had very small experiences with 2nd and 3rd, ages ago). Now I also play pathfinder (aka, D&D 3.75), and I can see that they need to be played differently.

4e is primarily about combat, and the DM should try to fit 3 or 4 combats between party rests. There's a lot of tricks I use to keep the party chugging along and risking their resources to make sure death and disastrous failure are ever present risks. I also add special rewards for very well played combat and generally try to make the objectives and terrain as varied as possible. I put npc interaction and decision points everywhere I can, but those things are really just "stuff between the combats". At the ends of quests (and my quests tend to be 2-3 levels long) are the times for the players to do their diplomatic stuff. The world I make for 4e is not super rich and detailed, I make stuff somewhat railroady, and then leave space for the players to contribute their own ideas to the world.

Pathfinder is much more lethal, so exploration, politics, role-playing, and just generally farting around, tend to be more common than combat. Plus combat in PF is waaay more simple, so there's not as much to draw players to do it constantly. The early levels are best, imo, with strong structure and objectives, but after a while the world builds and it gets more RP and sandboxy. The simplicity of combat means that one can be designed in a snap to respond to the players, unlike 4e, where combats are carefully constructed and prepared in advance.

My whole party is kinda on the fly. Some premeditation is involve, especially for essential events, but myself as a DM and the other few that run campaigns are VERY lenient and rarely say no. So having 60+ books to choose from with over 300 classes and like 2000 feats, we can get some awesome characters, and a hand full of shitty ones. Also, multiclassing is alot of fun, just throwing that out there.

Not exactly sure how epic and high level campaigns go in 4e, but you'll never experience what Dnd is truly capable of unless you make a VERY high level character. the highest I've gone is 70. All with a multitude of prestige and advanced classes. Like i said, you start to appreciate 60+ books at that point. It's also fun to pull feats and class features on a DM, and have him go, "What the shit, you can't do that!" With lenient DMs, we don't restrict each-other to books we know front and back.

And, just for the record, we all agree that Role-playing and table-top RPGs shouldn't be solely combat, which is another reason we don't do 4e.

Honestly, there is room for both games. I'd say that 3rd/PF feels more like LotR (danger and doom, politics and wars, lots of emotions), and 4e feels more like a 90's TSR adventure novel (motley band of tropes kick monster ass in exotic settings).

My pathfinder group isn't into dealing with over 9000 supplements. It's hard enough to just decipher the core PF rulebook. There seems to be a good variety of spells (I play fighter, so I wouldn't know for sure). For 4e, we bought the D&D insider, that way we can use character builder and the compendium to look stuff up for us. Some have said that flipping through 5 hours of books makes a character more valuable, but I'd rather let the software do the grunt work.

My 4e players (some overlap with the PF players) like structure and combat, so that's what I give them. I like it too, because I inherited the game world from a previous DM. The linear quests give me time to build settings and npcs of my own and slowly shift the world to my tone. I'm expected to come up with a 2-4 session PF game eventually, and I guess that means creating some rich, detailed content, but that's really not the kind of thing I like to do. DMs are always complaining that players miss or ignore 75% of the stuff they create, so I figure, put the game on rails (I like to use the "island method" when I can). Add interesting npcs, put lots of small decision points in, and then leave the big space between quests for players to inject their own content and decide what kind of quest to take next.
