????? - Humans gain a spirit, and thus, an imagination. The randomness of the universe skyrockets, as well as the possible universes that exist.
???? - The plane known as Makai is born out of this blob of soul energy. An entity starts taking care of it, aping the spirits that created her, and chooses the form of a human woman because she is the first lifeform there, and logically, must be a maternal figure.
??? - The girl from Makai takes good care of herself, and makes a trip to our world sometimes to learn more. Most people are afraid of her. She manages to meet a few people, including a man fasting in the desert. She asks him some philosophical questions (i.e., why he is fasting, why he won't let her help him, etc.), and learns a lot about humans, philosophy, and the concept of faith. She wants to learn more from him, but he convinces her she can only hurt this world with her power.
??? - Realizing she can never truly be of help to the humans that made her without permanently hurting them, she secludes herself back to Makai, where random spirits have taken up residence. Before she left, she allowed a homeless Romanian girl to stow away with her through the dimensional jump. The jump wracks the girl's body and soul, and "Shinki" (A name the girl had given to a oriental geisha doll lost in the jump, the girl had mispronounced something she heard an oriental trader say [She wanted it to be named "Belief", hence "Shinji"]) is forced to put her in stasis so she doesn't die.
1??? - Usami Renko Enrolls in College. Maribel Hearn Enrolls in college. Renko is a Science major. Maribel is an Arts major. Both are in the same dormitory hall. It is not remembered if they were roomates.
???- Usami Renko attempts suicide for unknown reasons. Maribel Hearn learns of Renko's attempt. Attempts to calm Renko down by showing her pictures that she drew that calmed her, of priestesses tending to shrines, of people taking care of the Earth and Heaven and Hell and the Moon and all the places in between. A place where legends lived and harmony ruled.
Renko appreciates the gesture and they form a kind of 2-person "club", whose goal is to find old and abandoned property and explore it. Renko finds the club therapeutic, and finds she has a goal in life. Maribel finds it inspirational, and paints more pictures.
1??? - The creatures of Makai venture outward, taking pieces of Makai (which were constantly "thought" into existence and were taking up space) with them and making bridges outward. The huge number of spirits doing this form a large landmass. Shinki grows incredibly powerful, as she is effectively the potential power behind every lost or abandoned idea in history.
19?? - Maribel and Renko experiment with hallucinogenic drugs and the idea of Lucid Dreaming.
They stop taking the hallucinogens; Maribel saw a gaping hole in reality with bug-eyes crawling out of it, and Renko kept seeing black-and-white oscillating patterns.
After this event, they realize they are completely lost in the woods, and have no markers with which to follow back. However, Renko finds their way home perfectly.
A strange, bookish girl in engineering inquires into their club. She is a temporary member, and imagines that they are in mythical battles wherever they go, and is quite noisy.
All three experiment with lucid dreaming when they find a suitable property, and Maribel attempts some rituals to encourage dream-sharing and out-of-body experiences.
They find they cannot recall their experiences, but Renko usually feels exhausted, and Maribel feels incredibly confident after a session. The third member never commented on her sessions.
199?: A small child freezes to death instantaneously in a cryogenics lab on campus after a tragedy involving an improperly sealed liquid helium drum. Her identity is unknown.
A girl in the Zoology department commits suicide by seppuku under a wilting tree. No note is left.
A crow flies into the window of the lab Renko works in, and plummets to earth, dead.
The third member accidentally runs over a frog with a lawnmower.
All three girls of the "Dream scavenging" club decide that these deaths were unfair, and that, in case there's no heaven, they should consign dead people to a fantasy realm where they can live the rest of their lives in peace. Maribel paints a picture and scrawls some of her blood and hair into it. She then burns it, consigning it to an idea rather than a picture.
The third member leaves the club, but promises to stay in touch with the others "one way or another", in her words.
1998 - Shinki notices a major spike in spirit migration. There is even plant life. She notices 3 "Big Spirits" that occasionally are not in the realm, jump dimensions easily, and are on-par with her power. Realizing how powerful the life on her realm is getting, she communes with these spirits about making a system of resolving disputes that is based on skill rather than force.
She opens Makai for general travel, encouraging these three entities to travel there.
