???? - The plane known as Makai is born out of this blob of soul energy. An entity starts taking care of it, aping the spirits that created her, and chooses the form of a human woman because she is the first lifeform there, and logically, must be a maternal figure.

??? - The girl from Makai takes good care of herself, and makes a trip to our world sometimes to learn more. Most people are afraid of her. She manages to meet a few people, including a man fasting in the desert. She asks him some philosophical questions (i.e., why he is fasting, why he won't let her help him, etc.), and learns a lot about humans, philosophy, and the concept of faith. She wants to learn more from him, but he convinces her she can only hurt this world with her power.

??? - Realizing she can never truly be of help to the humans that made her without permanently hurting them, she secludes herself back to Makai, where random spirits have taken up residence. Before she left, she allowed a homeless Romanian girl to stow away with her through the dimensional jump. The jump wracks the girl's body and soul, and "Shinki" (A name the girl had given to a oriental geisha doll lost in the jump, the girl had mispronounced something she heard an oriental trader say [She wanted it to be named "Belief", hence "Shinji"]) is forced to put her in stasis so she doesn't die.

Maribel is a student at Miskatonic University. While studying abroad in Kyoto, she meets a student named Renko who shares her interest in the supernatural. The two of them dream-quest together through shades of mystical realms. They desperately search for a way to cross over fully, eventually discovering that doing so would require a human sacrifice. This upsets them enough that they stop their dreaming and drift apart.

Months later, Renko invites Maribel to her house, saying that she's found a new way to make the jump. Maribel notices that her friend is acting odd right away, but still follows her into the cellar, where she has drawn complex sigils on the floor. Renko pulls a knife and tries to wrestle Maribel to the floor.

They grapple, rolling across the floor into the piles of junk scattered around the cellar. Maribel manages to grab an old parasol, using it to fend off Renko's attacks. Renko makes a desperate lunge and stumbles; as the two of them fall to the floor, the end of the parasol punctures Renko's neck.

As Renko bleeds out onto the floor and Maribel hugs the parasol in shock, the sigils begin to glow and the room begins to shake. A fissure develops in the air in front of Maribel, opening up to reveal thousands of disembodied eyes staring back at her. She tries to run for the door, but it is too late. The fissure pulls her in, parasol and all, and the realm she enters makes her its own.
