Looking back, I can't believe I downloaded and watch that whole anime just for that ONE scene with Gothic Lolita Kei. Not that it was a bad show, I just rarely watch subbed anime. That's how desperate I was.

Yes, this is the one that got debunked in a recent /a/ thread. Apparently even Japan was confused when it happened but given we had no translations people overseas were all like "wait, what?"

It also makes more sense. Kei's sister might find it weird that he crossdresser but might think "well, whatever, a job is a job" but having the childhood friend say he's in love with Kei (and on top of that while she is posing as him) must have honestly freaked her out on several levels (that Sawaki is in love with Kei, that Kei kissed Sawaki and the fact that she's passing as him well enough to the point Sawaki might subconsciously be confessing to her from her point of view).

I watched the live action series that came out a year ago or so, and I didn't like it that Kei was played by a female actor. Actually in some scenes when he's not crossdressing he's played by a completely different looking male actor...

If you allow me to vent for a minute, I always thought that "trap" was a stupidly offensive and problematic term, more than "passable" for trans. I mean, "trap" is a mere superficial and prejudiced observation of others, has nothing to do with gender identification. Damn, you can hardly distinguish "trap" from "shota".

Sure, a trap character may not necessarily BE trans, but everyone, trans or not, identifies as somewhere on the gender spectrum. And with some of these animu trap characters, it can be difficult to figure out whether male pronouns or female pronouns would be more appropriate, especially with the language barrier. Thus comes the guesswork.

As for traps and shotas being hardly distinguishable...one word: Enzai. Then there's those traps like Ringo Tsukimiya who are too old to be shotas, etc. etc...

Remember there are characters like Hideyoshi (Baka to test) and Kazumi (Get backers) that crossdress and do not claim to be females.

I kind of agree with this. When people use the female pronouns I see them as just being needlessly polite to a fictional character. IMO the only character around here that should rightly be called a 'she' is Poison.

I think we already have enough terms. Beautiful, masculine/feminine, androgynous, crossdresser and others aren't synonymous, after all. Some traps are absurdly young and feminine, others are just beautiful and androgynous, many need crossdressing to "achieve this status". What is a "trap", really? The term is only suitable for a specific type of pornography, I believe. You can't really use it for literature, comics or other forms of work.

Sorry, got this habit after so much yuri. Ah, wish there was more "boy who identifies himself as a girl with girl" and "girl who identifies herself as a boy with boy". Even "straigh traps" are scarce compared with "absurdly feminine uke with faceless seme".

I got into Steins;Gate recently, but was pretty disappointed with how they treated Ruka. She is naturally indistinguishable from a girl and the show reveals all the cards right away, which is very boring. Okabe, the main character, only considers her worthy of his romantic interest when... Sorry, that would be spoilers, but it's really disappointing. No, it's offensive, especially because on their first meeting Okabe says that her sex doesn't matter. Liar! To think that I liked him... Urgh! In summary, Ruka is treated like another stupid eye candy.
