I'll start.
Eve no Jikan (Time of Eve)
Why? Awesome story, interesting characters, and nice animation.

What it's about? "In the not too distant future androids have come into common usage. Rikuo, who has taken robots for granted for his entire life, one day discovers that Sammy, his home android, has been acting independently and coming and going on her own. He finds a strange phrase recorded in her activity log, "Are you enjoying the Time of Eve?". He, along with his friend Masaki, traces Sammy's movements and finds an unusual cafe, "The Time of Eve". Nagi, the waitress, informs them that the cafe's main rule is to not discriminate between humans and androids. Within the cafe androids do not display their status rings, and, when patrons depart, the door is automatically locked for two minutes to prevent someone from following them to discover their true nature."

Hunter X hunter

you might be fooled thinking it's another run of the mill shounen jump series but it's actually one of the best series I know.

while often I nowadays watch anime I find that I enjoy the characters in them more because of their archetype than how cool they really are on their own. not in this anime. so many characters are just completely bad ass or otherwise awesome it puts many other shows I could name to complete shame.

I actually can't think of anything I did not like about this series. good music, interesting story and as I said great characters and plenty of defining moments of awesome.

also, it's a good thing the series ended when it did because the manga is pretty much shoveling it's own shit now.

the plot essentially is young boy with great skills chases after his father and meets all sorts of people, does some crazy shit and helps save the world from an evil organisation and ends up in a huge virtual game-world created by his dad where he becomes much stronger (but not as over the top as most other shounen jump series like naruto or godno dbz), beats that game and then finds his dad.
also, even though the total series knows a large number of episodes I never felt like I was forced to munch through filler.

Seconding this. It's like a more realistic Chobits almost. (Sammy and Chii share the same VA, teh rie likes doing robots)

I recommend Planetes, but I'm sure most people who have seen it would. It's basically slice-of-life anime in space for the first few episodes, space garbagemen going out and cleaning up debris around the planet. It gets more serious when they start thinking about interplanetary travel and space terrorists start sabotaging shit and people begin dying of cancer from space radiation. Pretty deep shit.

The anime very clearly revolves around the 'new girl' and her mentor, but all of the characters get a couple of episodes dedicated to them, nobody gets left out. Not to mention how beautiful their depiction of space is. It's so refreshing to see people going out into space in big, clumsy spacesuits instead of zipping around in mech suits with a hundred guns strapped to each arm.

Good thread. I'd like to share Alien Nine.

Very short OVA, only four episodes, but I fucking loved it. Evidently the manga goes beyond the OVA, but I haven't read it myself.

In an extracurricular school group called Alien Party, middle school girls capture aliens that have invaded the school grounds. It sounds like a weak story, and seems pretty cutesy-wootesy at first, but don't let that fool you. The show quickly gets rather psychological, especially when you realize that these middle school girls are in very real danger of dying to these aliens.
Oh, and they wear aliens on their heads and skate around on roller blades.

The OVA ends right when shit really gets good, but I was happy with it. If you watch it, by the way, be sure to watch through the credits in the fourth episode. I shat bricks.

Does Hunter x Hunter get that much better? I had only made it to episode 31 before getting tired of it and watching other stuff...

>> No.8505   [Delete]   [Edit]

that is hard to say. personally, I first jumped into the story when they got into the video game world, which I thought was really cool. after I was hooked already I went back and watched the whole thing properly and enjoyed it, the first 31 eps too. I can't really say with any certainty you would like the later episodes better, but I would imagine so.

Last Exile.

Steam punk anime with warships, but in the air. I liked it since it was somthing new to me and refreshing and not the average plot line. Also alot of the characters are likeable and you can relate to must of them in some way.

The story is set on the fictional world of Prester, where its inhabitants use aerial vehicles known as vanships as a means of transportation. On this world which is divided in eternal conflict between the nations of Anatoray and Disith, sky couriers Claus Valca and Lavie Head must deliver a girl who holds the key to uniting the two factions. Although Prester itself is not a representation of Earth, it features technology reminiscent of nineteenth century Europe at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Many of its designs were also inspired by Germany's technological advances during the interwar period.

Seconded. Its almost as if the cutesy style and music is mocking the three girls. Creepy stuff when you think about it too much.

I recommend watching Eureka Seven if you haven't seen it already. Think of it as Code Geass meets Evangelion, but with added romance. And unlike most other anime, the romance is a key focus of the plot, and is done in a very realistic and charming way quite unlike anything else. Also, more obscure pop culture references than a nigga got chicken.

'Renton Thurston is a 14-year-old boy who lived with his mechanic grandfather in a backwater town. Every day he dreamed of being with the mercenary "Light Finding Operation (LFO)" aircraft pilot group "Gekkostate" and riding "Trapar" particle waves-- a sport called "reffing"-- with their charismatic leader Holland, especially when faced with his father's acclaimed past or his grandfather's desire to protect him. When a young girl named Eureka riding the original LFO, the "Nirvash typeZERO", asks his grandfather for a tune-up, she inadvertently brings the attention of the military to the garage; as a result, the garage is destroyed and Renton is forced to deliver a new type of interface-- the "Amita Drive"-- to the Nirvash. After a heated fight in which the Nirvash destroys the military LFOs by unleashing an immense amount of power, Renton is invited into Gekkostate. However, he quickly realizes that behind the facade of a traveling group of mercenaries is a very bitter reality.'

I honestly couldn't name anything better. This was probably the single greatest thing i have ever payed attention to. As sad as it may be i found myself crying (a little... <.<... >.>...) at the end. Also i've heard that this anime crushed everything else (in EVERY category) and won just about every available award; though i'm not sure about the validity of that statement.

Akumetsu - It may not be an anime but it sure was a very interesting read. I liked the characters and though the story was a bit too complicated for me sometimes was easy enough for me to follow along with the manga's explanations.

Summary: "Nagasawa Shiina was just your average 3rd year high schooler when her parents' company went bankrupt. In order to pay the bills, her family sells her into prostitution. At her first job, a mysterious masked man crashes the party...and it's someone she knows...

Akumetsu is the story of Hazama Shou, who defends his own view of justice in a vigilante manner while wearing a mask and calling himself Akumetsu."

The best thing about this series is that it has a lot of cliffhangers almost every chapter and gives you this urge to just continue reading on. It's one of the only series that has been able to hold my attention so well, and the message that it tries to get across is very important. Although it's already finished and I am sure most of you have read this already I thought I could just mention it for those of you who havent. I, myself didn't find out about it until a couple months ago, and right now am in the process of re-reading this entire thing.(Yes, i liked it that much)

bounen no xamdou or X'amd Lost memories

Shit rocks, great story, great characters, great setting and Visually Stuning. Just seems to go overlooked.

Sentan Island exists in a state of dreamlike tranquility; a small island, surrounded by the Yuden Sea, cut off from the war between the Northern Government and the Southern Continent Free Zone. Akiyuki Takehara lives on Sentan Island along with his mother Fusa. Despite his mother's strained relationship with his father, Ryuzo, the town doctor, the bond between father and son remains strong. One day the island's tranquility is shattered, when Akiyuki, along with his best friends Haru and Furuichi, are caught up in an explosion on a school bus. The explosion produces a mysterious light which enters Akiyuki's arm. With no time to understand what has happened, Akiyuki is transformed into a creature called Xam'd. Akiyuki rampages through the city, only to be stopped by a mysterious girl who offers him a choice: come with her and live, or stay and turn to stone. Accepting her offer, Akiyuki embarks on a journey of discovery that will take him to new lands, and help him understand the connection between himself and the world of Xam'd.

Heres the OP just to give you a feel about it,

Hmm, so far the story seems really kind of... two dimensional. It's alright, though - I'll keep reading it because I like the art and the badass mask.
Need to find a better translation though...
Edit: The later chapters seem to be done by a different translator, and it's much better. The plot is better, as well. Took a while to get to it, but I'm really liking this now.

Speaking of which, anyone who likes that may certainly like "Wolf Guy - Ookami no Monshou", made by the same mangaka team.

Quick Summary: "Ms. Aoshika is not only divorced, but an underappreciated teacher at her job. But one drunken mishap leads her to witness firsthand the brutal assault and murder of a young man. However, after fainting, she awakens to discover that all of the assailants have been seriously wounded.

And to her further surprise, the next day she discovers that not only is the young man Akira she met the night before alive, but he is now her new transfer student."

>> No.8718   [Delete]   [Edit]

Yes, thats the only down-side to Akumetsu, it takes a while for anything significantly different to happen in the plot. The main characters back story alone took about nearly half of the entire story to even show some key points.

To tell the truth, it wasn't so bad here. It was fairly obvious there was going to be a second season... Not to mention the first season's implied "ending" of the two shooting each other couldn't have happened, due to Suzaku's geass + Lelouch's heart device.

And it's worth repeating, 2nd season's end was motherfucking win. I'm sure most people have seen Code Geass already, but if you haven't you fucking better.

Throwing in another recommendation.
Kurau: Phantom Memory
It may seem a little boring at first, but it just gets better and better as the story progresses.

"In the year 2100, Dr. Amami is a scientist working in the field of alternative energy, who at the beginning of the series is on the verge of a major breakthrough in the area of Rynax energy. His daughter Kurau accompanies him to the lab on her twelfth birthday, where an experiment goes horribly wrong and she is struck by a bolt of this energy, which knocks her unconscious. When she wakes up again, it is found that her body has been taken over by two Rynax, who are actually sentient life forms and not just a form of energy. The awakened Rynax takes on Kurau's name and identity, and though her newfound superhuman abilities make her a subject of interest for scientists, Kurau manages to live a relatively normal life."

Name: Clannad / Clannad: After Story ( After Story is the must-watch sequel )

Why? Every moment is submerged and caressed in pure emotion, creating a dramatic and emotional atmosphere that ranges from happiness to sadness to downright depression. The characters actually make you want to like them, they're original and realistic. A plot like a roller coaster.

"Tomoya Okazaki is a third year high school student resentful of his life. His mother passed away from a car accident when he was younger, causing his father to resort to alcohol and gambling. This results in fights between the two until Tomoya's shoulder is injured in a fight. Since then, Tomoya has had distant relationships with his father, causing him to become a delinquent over time. While on a walk to school, he meets a strange girl named Nagisa Furukawa who is a year older, but is repeating due to illness. Due to this, she is often alone as most of her friends have moved on. The two begin hanging out and slowly, as time goes by, Tomoya finds his life shifting in a new direction."

Hakaba Kitarou

An 11 episode series based on the popular GeGeGe no Kitaro franchise. This series in particular is more adult oriented than it's predecessors and is the closest adaption to the manga. It uses a lot of grotesque humor and has a unique artstyle. Worth checking out if you want to see something different. Also you don't have to be familiar with the GeGeGe no Kitaro series to understand or appreciate this show.

Giant Killing

First time I got wind of the series is from this thread >>8948 and my initial reaction was "FUCK YEAH FOOTBALLING ANIME CONFIRMED FOR SPRING" cos you guys know how attached I've been for soccer/football since before I came in here. Eventually I figured out that it's based on the manga of the same name, so I read it on Mangafox/Onemanga/etc and I was mesmerised at the scenes in the manga. I could go on forever about everything that happened in the first volume of the manga, but I'll keep this post as short as I can.

So what's it about? Former fan favourite of East Tokyo United, Takeshi Tatsumi, takes charge of his former club and inherits a ragtag bunch of players who can't do any better than crap, and with a penchant for building up a giant-killing team, he has it all to do to transform the fortunes of his former side and lead them to victory.

...I just can't wait for the anime adaptation to come out.

I heard the xxHolic anime wasn't nearly as good as the manga. Something about the story doesn't translate well. Several people said it, but this link comes to mind:

Also, not an anime, but I suggest everyone should read SWWEEET―スウィート― at some point or another. Its basically about a love triangle between two identical twins and the girl next door. She returns feeling for the "older" brother and not the other, screwing him up. Then, a few years before the start, the older brother just vanishes, devastating the other two. The story picks up when the younger twin starts seeing his brother in the mirror.
VERY psychological, though, its hard to put it in a genre. (If you've seen "Welcome to the Dollhouse", you got a good idea of the "feel".)

Be prepared to be disappointed at the end, since Kotonoha fucking refuse to finish vol. 2 of a 2 volume series, so there's that. :/

Baccano... excellent anime. The various plot threads interweave into a complex tapestry as the series progresses, much like Durarara if you're watching that (same team behind it). Excellent animation throughout, highly recommended. I suck at synopses, so here's MAL's waffle:

During the late 1930s in Chicago, the transcontinental train, Flying Pussyfoot, is starting its legendary journey that will leave a trail of blood all over the country. At the same time in New York, the ambitious scientist Szilard and his unwilling aide Ennis, are looking for missing bottles of the immortality elixir. In addition, a war between the mafia groups is getting worse. On board the Advena Avis, in 1711, alchemists are about to learn the price of immortality.

Based on the award winning light novels of the same name, this anime adaptation follows several events that initially seem unrelated, both in time and place, but are part of a much bigger story - one of alchemy, survival and immortality. Merging these events together are the kindhearted would-be thieves, Isaac and Miria, connecting various people, all of them with their own hidden ambitions and agendas, and creating lifelong bonds and consequences for everyone involved.

Am I the only one who finds that Sword Art Online is seriously overrated?

To contribute, both "Binbougami ga!" (comedy) and "Kokoro Connect" (drama) were from that season, and were better.

Binbougami ga! is a slapstick comedy about a god of misfortune having to steal fortune from an overly fortunate girl.

Kokoro Connect is about a group of students undergoing trials brought on by some unexplained character.

I guess all the socially withdrawn, MMORPGing 14 year olds who watched this were like "This... THIS IS THE STORY OF MY LYFE!"

But seriously, even if it was aimed at a younger demographic, it still seems like a shitty show... I really dislike SPOILER how they went though the trouble of setting up the plot, then skipped the first 30 something floors, then did a bit of the middle floors, and then just didn't even finish their own setup.

There wasn't really any character development. The main character didn't change, the world around him changed. The heroine was pretty two dimensional. They didn't bring anything to the story, it felt like she was there just so the main character wasn't akward.

I anti-recommend this show.

Les Miserable's: Shoujo Cosette

Based off of the novel I presume. I haven't actually read the book, or watched the movie or the play. However, it has a feel of a Disney classic (albeit, much longer, its about 50 episodes).

The characters aren't incredibly deep on their own, but their interactions with each other is what makes it what great. It reminds me of baccano in that sense.

Summary: A mother and daughter, Fantine and Cosette, have left Paris and are travelling the french countryside as the mother looks for work. A sly inkeeper swindles Fantine into leaving her daughter in the care of him and his wife, in exchange for pay. The story then unfolds into the struggles and interactions of a large cast of characters in a poverty stricken France.

I haven't finished watching it myself, but I am in the process of marathoning it. I've been hooked since the first episode, and it will probably end up in my top 10.
