Just started messing around with an actual Touhou game for the first time (TH07 trial).

So far, so bad: I got my ass kicked by Alice both times. On easy. <insert laughing rabbits here>

I hope I get better.

I have been using Reimu A, is this a good idea? Should I try someone else?

Alice is nasty, so it's ok. Reimu is good for a beginner, Marisa is a lot faster and can be hard to control, and has a narrower line of fire.

I started with Marisa

Thanks for the responses. I tried Marisa (tricky to use, but the Master Spark is lots of fun) and Sakuya (I did pretty well with her, actually), and I think I'll stick with Reimu for a while.

You might want to get the full version:

The trial only has 3 stages. That's it.

The full version has 6 stages, an extra stage that can be unlocked by completing the game on normal without continues, as well as a "Phantasm" stage that can be unlocked by beating the extra stage and collecting 60 spellcards.

I know, and I actually downloaded the torrent with all the games, but wine only seems to like the PCB trial (won't even do the full PCB version). No idea why, but it doesn't matter because soon I'll be setting up Win7 to dual boot (I need to practice Windows, since I haven't had it on my home computer in years).

PCB full works for me with Wine, except that in recent versions the text doesn't show up (probably some simple font issue that I'm missing). Other games generally work as well, though PoFV is being weird lately and I haven't got the DLLs that the later games need.

In what manner does it not work?

They fail to install in various ways. I blame the random regressions that happen with every biweekly release.

looking further, it seems most of the problems may be related to wine being 32 bit and problems in ia32-libs

Does DirectX have anything to do with it?

I don't think so, but tomorrow I should be installing Win7 in dual boot, so it doesn't really matter what Wine weirdness is going on.

Reimu has the advantage of a small hitbox and a good range of fire, meaning you'll get more hits on the enemy while not having to worry too much about being hit yourself. Though Marisa has the advantage of a higher speed, which can be crucial during more hectical moments, with more concentrated fire, meaning you can be a mean sucker to the enemy if you play your cards right. Also, Master Spark is the best bomb, no question about it.

hmmm... I don't remember ever installing them (I downloaded them as archives containing already installed files). Maybe that's the difference.

The new set I downloaded are all "pre-installed"/unpacked, and they don't work with Wine either.

At the moment I am really enjoying the fact that Reimu's shots do so much tracking - very useful for a newbie.
